Cognitive Behavioural Therapies
Cognitive Behavioural Therapies is commonly referred to as CBT. CBT is an active problem-solving approach to psychological challenges such as depression, anxiety, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is based on the knowledge that people’s feelings, thoughts and actions are all interconnected and they are closely linked to the context and situation they live in. Therefore, making changes in any one of these areas can have an impact on the other areas. The client and the counsellor both have an important role in a CBT treatment. The counsellor knows quite a lot about the theories behind CBT and about how particular sorts of problems can present difficulties for people, while the client knows about how the problem affects them much more than the counsellor. Collaboratively, the client and the counsellor will use their respective information and knowledge to understand and overcome the psychological problems.
